How to Shop Second-Hand Like a PRO for 2025
As the new year has crept upon us, naturally, most of us make some New Year’s resolutions! The most common ones are going to the gym, eating healthier, maybe drinking more water, or traveling the world. Same here—but what about being more environmentally conscious? One of my New Year’s resolutions is to shop more sustainably, whether that’s buying second-hand or from local, small, sustainable brands.
In this blog, read what I’ve learned so far whilst shopping second-hand.
Do your research
Doing research beforehand is a must! Look for local thrift stores, check out their social media accounts (if they have any), and see if there are days when they restock so you can find the best treasures. Some thrift stores (usually at the end of the month) have sale days.
Shop with a plan
Make a wish list. The cheap prices might be tempting, but you must shop with a plan in mind. What do you actually need or are looking for? You do not need another vintage sweatshirt—trust me!
What I like to do is browse through Pinterest for inspiration while also keeping in mind what I already have in my wardrobe. As each item is unique and usually comes in one size, try to think realistically: if it doesn’t fit you properly, are you going to bring it to a seamstress, or is it going to be yet another piece in your closet collecting dust?
If you’re shopping for someone else, like your partner or child, bring a measuring tape to ensure it fits properly.

Learn the Art of the Hunt
Be patient. Some of the best thrift items take time. Visit stores regularly and don’t rush to find what you’re looking for. Go through every clothing rack and inspect each item—second-hand stores are truly a treasure hunt, and many clothing pieces do get overlooked.
Also, inspect carefully for stains, holes, or missing buttons. Minor flaws can often be fixed, but be sure you’re willing to take the time to repair them.
Sustainability and Quality Matter
Focus on the materials and quality of the pieces. Look for durable, natural materials like cotton, wool, and leather that can stand the test of time. Invest in classics—nothing beats straight-leg trousers, denim jackets, trench coats, or black blazers. These are statement pieces you want to keep in your wardrobe.
Prioritize high-quality items over fast-fashion pieces!

Shop with the Seasons
Buy according to the seasons—but actually the opposite. For example, when it’s summer, check out the winter section for sweaters and jackets, and then shop for summery clothes during winter.
Alternatively, follow seasonal restocks. Stores often restock with new inventory at the beginning of each season. Visit regularly to catch the latest additions.
Explore Online Platforms
If online shopping is more your thing, try shopping on websites and apps like Vinted, Depop, Poshmark, Facebook Marketplace, or whatever your country uses to sell second-hand items (or, I should say, your next treasures!).
While there is a risk of not seeing the pieces in person, you can make your search much easier by filtering size, brand, color, price, and even materials. This is definitely the best option for those of you who like staying in the comfort of your own home while shopping.
Embrace Creativity
Don’t miss out on other sections. Look through men’s and kids’ sections for oversized jackets, graphic tees, crop tops, or other unexpected finds.
If you’re crafty, upcycle your finds to fit your style. For example, a pair of jeans can become great shorts, or any kind of fabric pattern you like can become a scrunchie in less than an hour. If you are a beginner, check out ‘’Upcycling Clothes: The Ultimate Guide For Beginners’’. Pair thrifted items with pieces you already have in your wardrobe. Again, look for outfit inspiration on Pinterest or social media to put together the perfect “you” outfit.
Have Fun
And finally, remember to have fun! Take your friends with you and do challenges—find outfits for each other. You might be pleasantly surprised by what your friend finds for you—something you might not have picked out yourself.
Another fun activity is to find clothes for specific occasions: wedding guest, business casual, or a cozy day chilling at home. See who can do it best, based on what you actually end up buying.

After all, it’s not that serious! If you find something—great. If you don’t, I’m certain you will another time. Don’t give up on thrift stores just because one of your experiences didn’t meet your expectations. Keep an open mind, and trying out these few tips is going to make you a pro at second-hand shopping.
And your 2025 is going to be more sustainable, cheaper, and fun!
